Shoe hoarders examined

Could the Bag Lady Syndrome help explain the female side of pointless consumerism? Forty-six percent of women overall are troubled by a "tremendous fear of becoming a bag lady", according to the results of a survey conducted by Allianz, the Minnesota-based insurer.

"Two-thirds of women said the best thing about having money is the feeling of security it brought them, rather than buying power or status." The rationality, to the extent that there is one, of all those single-use stilettos in the closet is that they are a possessional marker checking against women's anxiety about being poor.

Risk of destabilization

The male:female ratio is absolutely critical to the going concerns of any nightclub manager, but in most macrosocieties, where social status - even successful integration - can depend on being part of a family, maintenance of the balance is basic to the survival of the civilization itself.

You've got to look past the gender of the lead researcher on this (as well as that of contact person "Jenny") but the conjectures here are interesting.
