I always thought that briefly checking out was a nasty habit I picked up from my Dad. But I've also long suspected that I do much better given a few moments in the late afternoon to shutdown and re-boot.

Could the Bag Lady Syndrome help explain the female side of pointless consumerism? Forty-six percent of women overall are troubled by a "tremendous fear of becoming a bag lady", according to the results of a survey conducted by Allianz, the Minnesota-based insurer.
"Two-thirds of women said the best thing about having money is the feeling of security it brought them, rather than buying power or status." The rationality, to the extent that there is one, of all those single-use stilettos in the closet is that they are a possessional marker checking against women's anxiety about being poor.
